Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-2019) has so far killed more than one 100,000 and infected more than five million people in the last five months throughout the world. The virus causes a severe infection which does not only affect the lungs but other human vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver that can also become vulnerable to the virus resulting in various disorders. The pathogenesis of the disease is complicated and results in multiple vital organ dysfunction. Up to date, no specific therapeutics are available, and the current management includes travel restrictions, patient isolation, and supportive medical care. Currently, many synthetic drugs are under trial for the treatment of this disease. Drugs previously screened or used for the treatment of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are the potential candidates for the treatment of COVID-19. This review aims at evaluating the currently used synthetic drugs as well as herbs for the effective treatment of COVID-19. The review will help physicians and health care professionals to understand current treatment strategies for the effective management of infection.
